About
Utah (Shaggy Bark) Juniper
The most common Juniper in Arizona and Utah. The tree has a
"shaggy" bark that hangs in strips from the trunk. Native peoples in
the area have used Juniper berries as a food source. American Indians
used the bark strips for cordage, sandals and weaving mats and bags.
The tree grows in elevations from 4000 to 7500 feet and is highly decay
resistant.
Alligator Juniper
The largest Juniper in the Arizona and Utah area. The bark has very
unique checkered plates, much like an Alligators back. The tree grows
in mountain areas above 4500 feet. The wood is desirable for burning in
stoves and fireplaces.
